I guess final negotiations and city council approval are still pending, but an official announcement sent out by the city today has announced that they have chosen Earthlink as their provider, who will sell of chunks of the city-wide service to resellers. Low income areas are slated to receive subsidized service at a rate of $10.00 month. Free wireless will be available in city parks and libraries. We are talking about 600 square miles of service. Completed installation is due in 2009.

For the average resident this would mean a monthly fee of likely less than $20.00/month, plus the one time cost of your signal booster inside the home or office.

it will be interesting to see how it pans out. There's already free wifi at our county libary branch - it's nice.
