I was sitting here thinking about what the internet is evolving into when I realized just how much stuff is currently out there! Yikes! I'm having some trouble organizing it all in coherently within my head and was wandering if you would like to help compile a complete list of the different 'types' of sites and networks currently running wild assessed by their form and their function (i.e. Blog and Splog = part of the blogosphere(network)). If we can get these types and organizational relationships better ironed out then we could see the big picture a little more clearly.

Here's a start:

Pure Commercial Sites
Online Storefronts
Squeeze-Pages
Membership sites
MMORPG's

Content Sites:

Scraper Sites
Article Sites
TGP's and MGP's
Personal / Hobby sites
Government-run .gov sites
School-run .edu sites
News Sites
Portals
Web Applications

Community Sites:

Forums/Communities
Chat Rooms
Blogs / Splogs
Social Bookmarking
Classifieds

Traffic Sites:

Directories
Toplists
Search Engines

Networks:
IRC
Blogosphere
Gnutella
VoIP
Social Bookmarking/Tagging networks

Transient stuff that's moving through the internet:

Email
Streaming Audio and Video
Torrents

I know I missed a ton and some of my assignments are probably off. When you add something to the list, please copy the list in it's entirety and include the complete list in your post so we don't have to piece them together.

Why?

I've got a few empty walls in my home office, and I thought it would be interesting to create a huge 'map' of the internet that illustrates the relationships of all of it's parts. I'm hoping to gain a better understanding of the 'big picture'. I'm creating it as a flowchart/mindmap on my PC first so I would be happy to publish it or sticky a d/l link to anyone who contributes to the effort (assuming I'm not just some crazy eccentric)

please define what you mean by TPG's and MPG's MMPORGS, and Squeeze-Pages.

TGP = Thumbnail Gallery Post (Adult)
MGP = Movie Gallery Post (Adult)
Squeeze Pages = Single page, ultra-long sales text sites.

Travel sites.. tho some of those bridge some gaps between a number of other categories..

I would be interested to see what you ultimately come up with.
