But how about 405 lb-ft of torque at the wheels [e90post.com]?
Probably beyond my driving ability, but I think I must possess it. ;)

Diesels ooze torque, the article explains why.
Yeah, that is the truth!
Stats & facts don't much matter for average drivers, often not for good drivers!
On paper my wife's ride can smash my ass, but, in practice it rarely never happens.....
I know you like BMW, I like Porshe, and my wife could kick both of our asses in her Corvette.......if only she learned how to drive it!
So it doesn't really matter unless you intend to take racing seriously :)
I know for a fact that I would lose by at least 5 shots to Tiger Woods over 18 holes if he was only armed with a 7 iron, and I had a full bag.
There comes a point where skill always wins.......it takes time!
0-200mph in 15 seconds. That is horsepower.

On a motorcycle! Talk about being beyond ones driving ability.
The fastest car I ever drove was a Viper RT-10. Not sure what the HP or torque was (wasn't mine), but wow did it have acceleration.
My current fun car is a 1980 Mercedes 450sl. It's in mint condition with only 46,000 original miles. Not real fast, but fun to drive.
One of my favourite subjects.
Yup, power isn't everything, but it sure helps. There was a classic race between two cars in the seventies. It was between a small 1200cc car, and much bigger engined car (can't remember its cc, but was at least three times the size of the small vehicle). These two cars were head to head thoughout the whole race, overtaking each other two or three times each lap. The little car had the agility on the corners and nipped past the big beast. Then, on the straight, the big car blew away the little one. It was gripping stuff.
I was trying to track down the video of the race, but can't find it.
So, do you want acceleration, or do you want agility round corners. Take a look at the BBC's Top Gear programme and The Stig's lap times. [topgear.com]
The Ariel Atom [arielmotor.co.uk] is up there with the Ferrari Enzo, yet there is no comparison in cost. The guys at Top Gear reckon that the Atom was the most fun they'd had for a long time.
Power is great, but going round corners at speed is amazing.
How much power? I don't know "power" on its own is the solution. Power to weight ratio is the thing that makes the difference, and a lightweight well balanced vehicle will always feel great to drive. The Lotus Exige has only got 190BHP, but its 0-60 is 4.7 seconds.
Is that enough power?

It's always exciting to watch sports cars racing against muscle cars. Comparing the 2 causes more debates and arguments than politics. However when it comes to sound, to me, there is no camparison between the ROAR of the beast to the sound of a vacuum cleaner.
Nothing like the sound of power in the Detroit muscle cars from the 60's and 70's.
However my old 3 door Sierra Cosworth - 205 bhp, lowly rear wheel drive is much more fun to drive. Not as fast in a straight line, but much more involving through the corners!
