How long do the hosts usually keep pur sites backed up for guys?

I'd guess there is no hard and fast rule on that. It must come down to the SLA (Service Level Agreement) you have with each individual host.

7 days with my host - I can explain how angry I am - Alot of hard work down the drain.

I tried using wayback machine for one I really wanted back - No luck - When I backed up on CD it never write to the disk properly.

If your SLA said it would be longer than 7 days, then yes you should be angry with your host. Otherwise, it's your responsibility, and so unfortunately you can only blame yourself.

It has just dawned on me that I have would have had the website on my haddrive about 1 year ago.

I have started a new thread.

I have since formated the drive more than once but do you think it would be possible to recover the data?
