Riding the world's first purpose-built hydrogen-powered motorbike may be environmentally friendly - and fun - but where does it leave its more traditional petrol-driven cousin?

Weird. Weird and fun. That's what it's like to ride the world's first purpose-built hydrogen fuel cell motorbike.

The only noise is from the tyres and the wind whistling through your crash helmet. People don't look around as you approach - they just stare after you've gone past.

Apparently, it'll do 50mph and cover up to a hundred miles.

Would you have one?

I have a friend who's son (an engineering student at University of Oregon) has converted several things to hydrogen, including a lawn mower and a car.

Fuel capacity is the primary limitng factor on vehicles. High pressure tanks weigh a lot and have limited capacity, thus putting severe limits on operating range.

The lawn mower, of course, did not suffer this problem - and converting a single cylinder IC engine is much simpler. I could foresee a definite niche for small IC engine conversions.

Interestingly, the same young man was able to build a solar power electrolysis setup to produce, compress and bottle hydrogen.
