Well, I've finally made it into the wonderful world of - not Vista, but XP, because it's high time I have a functioning copy of IE7, which won't install on 2000, my latest Windows version.

It certainly is a lot more colorful than the previous Windows I've had. And it's the first time I've had an OS which keeps telling me how insecure it is (endangered it by virii and the like, and it would be happier if I installed some anti-virus software, please).

(I use Windows mainly for testing my websites in IE, and the very occasional Windows-only app, so the need to upgrade has been minimal until now).

Grisoft AVG Free Home Edition will gladly calm this beast. And it's free.

But you **can** calm down those bubble-gum toy colors to the classic interface if you so wish. :-)

Avast is another nice free AV software you can download. Much lighter footprint than Norton.

Ah, I've found how to quieten down the UI, thanks.

As for AV, I never realized you can get free stuff. I'll give it a miss for the moment: I only use IE for my own sites, and as the installation is running inside VMWare anyway I have a copy of a "clean" installation I can revert back to should anything go wrong.
