I have a laptop, which it has a...laptop speaker :). I am not complaining; it's actually pretty good given the size of the thing, but if I get good external speakers, will I get a much better quailty or will the sound card still ruin it?

I am thinking of buying the speakers and leaving them to a place I spend a lot of time but don't feel the need to bring anything else but my tiny laptop.

Get a decent set of headphones. Cheaper and better sound to boot.

thanks Bill, while I need external speakers for the house, I got an idea from your post: buy an Ipod & external speakers for it (or wait till they sell the iPhone compatible speakers).

Decent speakers will make a massive difference.

The sound card on a laptop will perform perfectly well in stereo, all you really need for most purposes.

I'd suggest getting a set of speakers that have 2 small high frequency speakers and a sub woofer that can be hidden away. Your ears can only distinguish the origin of higher frequency sounds, hence even high end cinema sound systems only require a single low frequency source.

You'll be amazed what you can get for under the price of an iPod.

Bearing in mind I used to sell Linn Audio products (very expensive) and I'm super picky about sound systems, I'd still say that for most uses there is no reason to go overboard. Under US$100 will get decent office speakers.

The Logitech Z-2300 will shake pictures off the wall. Look for some refurbs on e-bay. I have these speakers and they rival many home stereo systems. They will work well for a laptop or an Ipod.

interesting question, walkman.

I have been looking at getting a good quality speaker set, even though my laptop works fine.

Ideally I wanted to get wireless speakers so I could mount them on the wall, or at least avoid the 'wire' problem if I placed them a little way from me.

Anyone gone wireless?

will I get a much better quailty

The way I see it, is, that the speakers can only reproduce a signal 'up to' the quality of the original, i.e, the quality of signal from your sound card dictates the final signal. Rubbish in, etc.....

Hey inbound, I helped Ivor pay for his yacht selling LP12s....LOL

Anyway, back on track.....

Something to bear in mind that will affect your enjoyment of the sound is the environment of the speakers.
If they are to go alonside a wall, I guess there must be many compact, active systems, designed to work alonside a wall, at very reasonable cost.
If you do not have a wall, go for a pair designed for free air use.
Enjoy....

tbear,

As I'm from Scotland I went to the Linn factory for training, it was quite cool seeing how much automation they put into their stock system (this was around 10 years ago).

Also, they had their own record label just so they can create vinyl to the highest specification possible. The LP12 demo that they do is amazing. You listen to a song on a (very good) rival system and swear blind that there is a scratch on the record as there is a regular indistiguishable sound that sounds just like a small scratch. Then they put the same record on a Linn setup and you can actually hear that it's a band member tapping his foot! (you also get a copy to take away and try on your own system/s)

But, as you know, quality like that costs a LOT. A true case of "if you have to ask the price, you probably can't afford it".

I use a pair of Sennheiser wireless headphones HDR85.
They sound great, and I can walk anywhere with them and still hear my tunes.

I did a search for the wireless headphones and they look great. Problem is it's a little hot in Thailand to wear headsets, plus I have to listen out for the phone, and pretend to be working at least! which are a few reasons I have been looking for wireless speakers.

I listen to a lot of music, radio, music, songs etc while I am working and would love a wireless surround speaker system.
