Have you told your girlfriend about your site?

Just wanted some advise regarding telling your GF about your website with Adsense. Is that a risk? I have read earlier not to as if there is a breakup you could get hosed by the girl.

Not if her sites run Adsense too...

Perhaps. But what if you don't tell her about it and she eventually finds out about it and gets all pissy because you "hid" something from her? Then you get the breakup AND she knows about the site AND she has a hard target on which to vent her anger. :)

Here's another thing to add to the AdSense wish list: a place where we can add terminating relationships (personal and business) and known IPs used by those people.

If you are not serious about her then I wouldn't bother telling her. But if you do just don't cheat on her or p!ss her off if she is a vindictive type of person!

Yes I have, and I'm not the least bit concerned.

If you are worried about it, I suggest you break up now and go find yourself someone that you can trust. That is, if you are worthy of having a GF you can trust.

I know that I would never mess with an ex's income, and I know that my GF would not mess with mine if we broke up. Then again, I don't think either of us would ever be invited onto Jerry Springer.

Half my sites are joint ventures with him - he comes up with the content for them, but he can't actually do the work, and the accounts are all in my name, and the sites are hosted on my own server. So we're kind of tied to each other. There's very little he could do (if he were inclined to, which is unlikely) that I couldn't undo very quickly.

Have you told your girlfriend about your site?

No, but I intend to right after I tell her about my wife ;-)

It's an interesting question. Much depends on how much you're making. The good thing about Adsense in a relationship situation is retaliation options are very limited to nil. Nobody can wreck your 'Adsense reputation' or talk Google into banning you (unless there's a TOS infraction). I mean what could someone say to G?

I think the TOS violation is what is being referred to. I seem to remember at least one person who blamed a relationship gone sour for getting booted out for invalid clicks, but my memory might be faulty.

No, but I intend to right after I tell her about my wife ;-)

yea, that could be an awkward conversation for me as well - explaining about a "girlfriend", I mean

I think your memory is good because I recall that same thread.

And if my memory is correct, two important phrases to remember that resulted from the thread:

1. Trust no one

2. Loose lips sink ships

Concerning #2 - If you're under 40 and didn't pay attention in history class, research the relevance of the phrase. Hint: Think World War II

:-)

Coming to the question, I think Adsense favours "family style businesses".

In my case, I just helped her set up her first Adsense site, and guess what? Her eCPM is three times mine!

PS: yes, the "Adsense girlfriend" thread existed, it's here:

It's ok to mention the site, but under no circumstances talk about the income - either its value or the way it works. Most people have no idea, so keep it that way. Any answers to 'does it make money?' - say things like (with indifference):

'Meh, could be making more'
'Let's me afford milk in my coffee'
'It's ok, don't know if it's worth my time'
'The money is not important - I enjoy working on the site.'

These four answers are ranked in terms of how much the truth is being bent.

Seriously, once you tell someone, there is no going back. If the numbers are good, she may even be proud of you and tell lots of people - including the income details. And for god sake, don't say 'it's secret, don't tell anyone'.

I'm sure if she finds out, the first think she thinks of for revenge wont be to mess with your sites, even if she would know how? I know most girls I know wouldn't know how to hurt mine.

Good idea to either tell/show your girlfriend/wife/kids your online business or write up a little "Important: My Internet Business" note for your loved ones in case you should be hospitalized or die. Like a will.
You sites are dependent on you beeing on top of things, if you should die today your sites will probaly hang in there through the month. But you want your loved ones to take over or sell it before all the value you have created goes down the drain.

Make a note so they can decide if they want to take it over or sell it.
Include explanation of the business model, where the site is heading, critical relationships, critical contracts, payments, URL's, usernames, passwords and all.

My wife is aware of my Internet business ...

note for your loved ones in case you should be hospitalized or die

Good point, a note with all your login names and passwords for AS, hosting server details and other stuff.

About the "hospitalized or dead" problem, see this classic thread, "Hit by a Bus - What Instructions should be left":

It's not a girl friend, it's only a business client.

He works in the same area, as my main AdSense sites are.

I once made the failure, to look on my AdSense stats while I was connected in his network. I thought no problem until I realized, that he has a fixed IP.

Now my SSI shows at his IP only Amazon ads.

The notebooks of my wife and my children have manipulated user agent strings.

Now my SSI shows at this user agent strings only Amazon ads.

When ever my SSI takes actions, it sends an email to me.

I'm happy to tell people that I sell advertising space on my sites.

I'm much more cautious about telling them that for some of it I get paid per click.

I've tried and failed.

It's hard enough explaining this to people who understand HTML, let alone those who think that Google owns the Internet and Browsers are a breed of dog...

My girlfriend wouldn't do it because she'd probably think she was making me money if she did try to click.

Now that I think about it, I hope she's not trying to do that now!

Hahahahaha. The same idea has crossed my mind, once or twice. >;->

To those friends and family who ask, I explain that all my advertising is CPM or commission based or sponsorship. I never mention CPC. Ever.

Ive no one exactly just what are my sites.

My immediate family know I have sites but not their domain names, apart from that no one else knows, should the subject come up at dinner parties etc I just play dumb (which isnt hard for me) and claim the web is way over my head.
