Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs on Tuesday unveiled a new mobile phone that downloads and plays music as well as a set-top box that allows people to stream video from their computers to their televisions.

Jobs said Apple's iPhone would "reinvent" the telecommunications sector and "leapfrog" past the current generation of hard-to-use smart phones.

IPhone is less than a half-inch thin - less than almost any phone on the market today. It comes with a 2-megapixel digital camera built into the back, as well as a slot for headphones and a SIM card. Jobs did not immediately provide details on price or availability.

That's going to upset the apple cart (pun intended). ;)

Yeah-they've got me reconsidering my "no cell phone" philosophy...

Too bad they won't be for sale until "sometime in June". Cost reportedly $499 for the 4 gig model and $599 for the 8 gig model.

me too...the 8GB one too. This is perfect. For me, a smaller screen /phone would have been better but others might like the larger internet screen so it's a good compromise.

You need to wait a few months to get one, anyway, because you want to get out of your current cell carrier agreement and switch to Cingular.

Next Christmas, this is the only thing on my list. Contract with Verizon expires in November.

I'm opting for the Nokia N95 instead. I like the ideal of being able to record DVD quality video when I'm out and about - I could never be bothered carrying around a seperate camcorder (or digital camera / mp3 player).

Unlike the N93 it manages to look good - and you can connect it direct to your tv to watch video that you've recorded. Video is the killer ap for me - watch out YouTube - here I come!

The N95 has a 5 megapixel camera, free GPRS software, wireless headphones, and is a real "smartphone" capable of using software developed by others (only Apple built/approved software will work on the iPhone).

Nonetheless do I like the touch screen functionality of the new iPhone and it looks good - it was a tough decision.

The N95 and iPhone are pushing the boundaries quite a bit - it will force others to release yet more innovative phones - good news for consumers.
