I hope I don't ruin anyone's holiday with this sad news. [blog.wired.com]

The Wall Street Journal says they are going after an older market, girls 14 and up. Currently the comic is read by girls 8 to 12. The WSJ ends its article with this analysis:

"There's not a lot of knowledge or awareness of 'Archie' " by teens, says Samantha Skey, senior vice president of strategic marketing at Alloy Media + Marketing, a New York youth-marketing consultant. These days, she says, teenage girls follow "celebutantes in the press who are blogged about. Paris Hilton is like a comic character in lots of ways."

smells so good

I've never been a big Archie fan, but those character are recognizable from whatever era they were drawn. Modernizing them for todays readership just makes good business sense, IMO. I wonder, does that mean we were less discerning back in my day?

Oh yes, always good for a chuckle.

I agree with those who say that part of the charm of the Archie comics is how the hark back to a more simple time. I don't think this will connect with the 14- to 16-year-old group. I predict this will flop and they'll stick with their basic artwork.

Horrible! The new look doesn't have the charm of the old one.
