We have always had good office parties but we have been expanding our businesses and now we are up to 160 employees or so. If we do a restaurant etc it is going to be a min of 5000 euro. Any ideas how to do a cheapie and still not appear to be :)

Not sure what kind of space you have in your building, but it seems like the best thing to do would be to decorate it (make it really decorated: winter-wonder land :)), play some music, set up some tables, chairs, and get the food catered. Maybe do something with the lighting (candles, indirect lighting, etc..)

A cafeteria setting would be best.

The more time you put into the setup the more thankful your employees will be.

Best of luck!

How mean do you want to be?
If you look mean, your employees will notice, and then you'll soon have fewer of those pesky employees to worry about. ;)

How about some food, drink, music and a photocopier?

What more would you need?

when we have a christmas party it is usually full blown party time.

I mean, booking a venue for 300 people, free 3 course meal, free bar all night, casino brought in, live band then a disco till 2am. I think around the region of £30-50,000 would be about it for us.

It does cost a lot, but the employees are vauled assets for our company and deserve it. When you look at the total cost it does seem a lot, but if you scale it into the salary of the person, it's not too much more per head.

Then you get loads of office gossip. Who kissed who, where did people wake up in the morning etc. Some of the stories the following days/weeks are classics. Well worth the cost in humor value alone i'd say.

a separate room for said photocopier, with a lock on the door.
