I've got this funny problem. My main domain (since 1994) is a very short domain.

I sort of lost touch with the site stats for a while.

Just looking at it over the weekend I notice I get 10K visistors / month - 95% look at 1 page and are gone.

Turns out, I've finally figured out my domain is essentially the same as an airport code for a very busy asian airline and people type it in thinking they are getting flight info or something, then they see they are at the wrong place and then they're gone.

(Suffice to say the original site has nothing to do with travel in Asia..)

Here's the deal - I posted in Foo to see if I can get a LOT of creative ideas as to what to do... I've got plenty, but I want to see what kinds of fun and serious things you all come up with.

Sort of like brainstorming?

Let it fly!

thanks,

C.

This is an airport code? Like ATL for Atlanta, GA?

what is the site about (your not going to play around with a 100k a month ecomerse site as you would with a hobby site which earns -$x)

The site originally was built for lead generation and it used to work pretty good in the 90's.

That business seems to have run its course as right now it doesn't produce much. I'm fairly willing to "play" around with it to see what can come from it.

maybe affiliate with a hotel discount site, traveler's insurance, airline miles signup, car rentals, etc.

Put up a few sentences about travel and stick an adsense banner underneath it

1) throw up a monetized lander page
2) sell the domain

Park it .. and let the domain earn through relevant ads...

With so much type in traffic, it is sure to be a winner :-)

1. Adsense or other PPC ads
2. Affiliate links to airlines, etc.
3. Both of the above :)

If it also has some google PR then not only can you do what sem4u said, but you can also sell links, which can add up to quite a bit a month.

OK, so _how_ do I do this without befalling the scammers and such? I checked out some affilliate marketing sites and I do not feel comfortable dealing with what I found.

Yes, the site has PR of 5 last time I checked.

Also, I don't speak any asian languages and I KNOW the biggest orgination of traffic is Beijing!

Now that is a trick which if you want a straght forward answer tailored to your needs you need to pay for.

If you are satisfied with getting a million contradictory answers, going down wrong way streets and learning through trial and error, then you can start by reading this forum, and continue your reasearch on your choice SE.

Or you could skip the affiliate game, let others play that and get secure adsence cash.

Plus the link selling can get you some money, PR5 links in the travel industry are not free ya know.

Would you sell this domain by any chance?

Now it looks like PR 4 (but its been a 5 for years).

Not quite interested in selling but I might rent or partner.

I'm quite familiar with the trial and error approach and this looks like a road I would rather not take at this point.

Particularly since I just verified a good chunk of the traffic is definately coming from China PRC and Taiwan.

Sedo is the easiest way. Just signup and change your name servers to theirs.

well thanks to this thread, and the fine foo-ster attention, this has been extremely productive for me. Now I know what a domainer is - and (duh!) I had no idea there was a forum here devoted to it. Just from asking a question or 2.

Next question - since this is about China, Europe based travelling people who are doing the typing-in, any quick advice on cloaking so that visitors from the US get one site and elsewhere get another?

Is there domain parking that starts with a cloak?

(Where's that guy in the orange blazer when you need him?)

The other thought I had was to try dayparting - serve one site 9am to 9pm (east coast time) and then the other 9pm - 9am to get the other side of the hemisphere?

Using DNS doesn't seem to fit my situation as it takes too long to propogate.

I recomend you don't park it. Put up a few articles (you can use free ones, just give credit) then sell links for $5 a month with a max of 10 links. That is cheap and should fetch you $50 a month.

Then add adsence, and you should be seing at least $75-$100 a month.
