My forum and another forum have been talking about the same topic, similar number of posts, similar keywords.

Both our forums are heavily SEO'ed, with the other using keyword tags and other SEO techniques more than mine.

From no ranking, within 4 days google ranked my forum #1 in the search, above that of the second forum for the keywords AND the name of the second forum ( the story examplesite.com).

So despite the other forum having the URL in the search term, somehow my forum was considered more important for that topic, when the topic was about the other forum.

I found that very suprising.

You don't say how old the sites are - nor do you discuss most of the 150+ factors that Google considers in compiling the serps, so I can't comment on the 'surprising' element; but if you are doing well, that's great - but that doesn't mean you can retire ;)

Google does not rank sites on importance; it's a matter of relevance to the search term.
