Im trying to set my res to a higher setting than the one I have now but I keep getting this error.

Attention input signal out of range, please change signal timing.

Whats all that about and how do I stop it?

This would probably be better posted in the hardware forum but, as it's here (for the moment), I'll take a stab at answering by saying that you are simply trying to use a setting that your video display device (monitor) doesn't like (can't handle).

There are usually limits as to what configurations a device like this can handle. Sometimes the error is an indication you've reached the upper end of it's capabilities and sometimes it just means the resolution you've selected is not supported.

It was working previously at higher res, however I have just installed windows XP pro, do you reckon that may have caused the problem?

Sometimes an error can be generated by the monitor but more often it's generated by the operating system (XP) driver, as would appear to be the case here.

The previous driver probably didn't 'care' if a configuration might be invalid while the XP driver (which now goes through a rather rigorous certification process) seems to be erroring on the side of caution... since we know the configuration was previously achievable.

You may be able to locate a different (although probably non-certified) driver by Googling your display device information or as I said in my previous post... you may be able to find another resolution that works.

at the risk of being indiscreet ..is your XP pro legit? ..some of the barebones and slimline stuff wasnt dissed by the brightest sparks ..and some will only run properly on the dells that it was OEM'ed into ..and others like "gold SP1" are better left in their jewel cases ..

sounds like the refresh rate for your monitor / and or your graphics card ..doesnt like the signal your box is telling it to use ..

as mentioned ..is really a hardware question ..whats the specs of what you have ( box and screen ) and what are you trying to make it go to ..

What was your previous OS? 98? It's entirely possible the driver is not XP compatible. Dig around for how to check this (sorry not available at the moment, my search button is off the clock. :-) )

Yes it is legit.

The Pc is nearly 4 years old so I suspect that this has something to do with it.

Fine ..but you understand ( I hope ) that asking was a necessary precursor to diagnostics ..

the specs quoted by MS as being needed to run XP pro are very approximative ..one can run it with lower than the required specs ( and it will run OK ) and higher and it will not ..

as always .."he who dies with the most RAM wins " this also includes RAM on the chip ..and the type of MOBO ..

AMD 6 is considered to be the minimum needed to run XP PRO with 64 megs of RAM ( yes it will work ..but it will be finicky and kludgy if you want to run heavy apps like adobe "anything" or zonelarm firewalls and or firefox after 1.00 ) ..even if they are running in the background ..norton AV ( I digress here for a laugh at the acronym )will bring it to near standstill and make you long for 98II ..

doze specs say pentium II ( and for most anything else you could say ...in that case I have this here celeron 400 equivalent ..usually shipped on laptops ..even toshiba ..and so it will run as easy as 98II does on a desktop ..)

NOT SO ..:((

so what is the exact spec of your machine ..and if you know how to access the info ..what is it configed to run at start up ..

and what is the monitor ..

the more detailed info you can give ..the more chance you have that between us all we can find an easy free solution ..( tweak ) or a slighty more painfull ( hardware swap ) one ..
