Craigslist provides much more than personal ads (which aren't even mentioned in the article). It can be a great place to find just about anything you can think of, in your area or in many other places.

I found all kinds of good stuff on Craigslist, including both of my mountain bikes, my newest computer, and my house, all very reasonably. Craigslist is a terrific resource, which is why it gets four billion page views per month.

The article, titled "Craigslist founder says he won't cash in", quotes him as saying that it's not for sale and "If you're living comfortably, what's the point of having more?"
