Yahoo and Microsoft have taken a big step towards interoperability between rival instant messaging (IM) solutions by announcing that they have connected their users to create the world’s largest IM community.

The 350 million users of Yahoo’s Messenger and Windows Live Messenger can now exchange instant text messages across the free services, as well as see their friends’ online presence, share emoticons and add new contacts from either service.
“Interoperability between IM services has consistently topped our users’ wish lists,” explained George Hadjigeorgiou, general manager, Yahoo communications products Europe commented.

That seems a lot of folks to me, is that correct, 350Million?

Once you allow for the fact that prior to this, people needed both accounts, the number of accouints is 350,000,000 - but the number of users is 175,000,001.

And the number of active users is probably substantially fewer.

I've told them 175,000,000 times, "Don't Exaggerate!" :)

350 million users sounds like a lot but as a percentage of the world's population it is manageable.
