OK, I like cats as much as the next cat lover. Until today I never heard of a hypoallergenic cat, but apparently through selective breeding a kitty protein that triggers allergic reactions in people has been removed. That sounds scary enough, then there's the price tag. Only $4000 (or thereabouts) for your very own sneeze free kitty. For that kind of money it had better be trained not only to use a litter box, but to clean it too!

I think I'll save my money today, and put a little more effort into befriending my annual winter visitor - the black and white tabby that's moving back to someplace under my shed. Here kitty kitty.

Yeah, hypoallergenic pets aren't cheap. I got my last dog from a breeder who bred dogs to be hypoallergenic and non-shedding. She said she decided to do that because her daughter had allergies to dogs but other breeders wanted $1K + for a hypoallergenic dog. So, she breeds her own and charges less than half that.

A cheaper solution would be to buy a steam cleaner (one that emits real pressurised steam) and clean carpets and furnishings regularly.

A friend of mine is allergic to cats and his wife's two little beasties were made to live outside. Now he steam cleans once a week and they live indoors, as long as he doesn't pick them up and sniff them he is OK.

For that kind of money the cat better clean my entire HOUSE!

Are Rex (curly coated) or Sphynx (hairless) cats hypoallergenic? Poodles and most curly coated dogs are usually safe for folks who are allergic - I know someone with dog allergies and severe asthma who has no problem at all living with 2 standard poodles ...

Glad I don't have allergies - I can make do with a $20 shelter cat and a couple of freebies ..

The whole issue of hypo-allergenic pets is not to be sneezed at...

:-)

Someone had to say it...
