Extremely annoying IE thing - Arrggghhh!

I was watching Dragons Den on my desktop direct from the bbc site - the feed opens up in a small box.

I decided to click on an shortcut on my desktop that takes me to a web page - assuming that it would open up in a new window.

To my utter dismay the page instead opened itself up in the small window I was using to play the Dragons Den. Arrggghhh!

This is the third time I've done this in the past hour! I think I also get a similiar think happening when I click on preview in Dreamweaver.

Is there anyway to force a shortcut / new instance of IE to open up in a new window?

You can change this in the registry.

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Value Name: AllowWindowReuse
Value Data: 1 is default, 0 opens every shortcut link in a new window.

If the AllowWindowReuse value is not present, you can create it as type REG_DWORD.

Note: editing the registry can be dangerous!

I think under the Options -> Advanced Settings there is an "allow window reuse" setting, which if it does the same thing, would be much safer to play with!

Step 1: Install Firefox
Step 2: Delete IE shortcuts
Step 3: Sigh your relief

Enjoy!

Thanks lammert & DamonHD

Yep - I found a "Reuse Windows for Launching Shortcuts" option under advanced - that's great thanks!

JAB Creations - the only thing that annoys me more than the extremely annoying IE thing are folk who answer ALL IE issues with a "Switch to FireFox" post - Arrggghhh! ;)

- I'm only joking - I do have FireFox installed, but I still prefer IE :)

I always open 2 instances of IE.

That works well for me.
