Quick - Name all 12 planets.

The solar system has just got a whole lot more complicated.

Being a member of the 'Death to Pluto' camp, I am deeply disappointed, that a bunch of scientists put sedimental feelings before reason and logic.

Maybe common sense will prevail before the official vote on August 24.

I say the other three should be:
Mo, Larry and Curly.
Nyuk, Nyuk!

Mercury, Venus, Terre (home, sweet home), Mars, Ceres (?), Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Charon (wait, aren't they the same?)... and 2003 UB313?

When I was a kid space was romantic, I actually liked learning about it in school. There were strange names, bizzare alchemical symbols, nifty looking maps and all kinds of interesting things that got me "in the door" as it were, and then I started learning the real science of it. That old stuff isn't science (anymore) and I admit that that kind of nostalgia doesn't help scientific progress, but "2003 UB313?" Can't someone come up with a better name than that? At least new plants and animals get latin names, however unpronouncable they may be.

2003UB313 is a place holder name until IAU decides to name it. And they can't name things until they know what they are. And since they just come up for a definition of a planet (and it only took 2000 years), they can name 2003UB313 as a planet using the planetary naming convention.

The rules of the IAU, is that it must be named after a greek or roman god of creation mythology.

2003UB313 has a nickname of Xena. This will not stick as Xena is a made up name from a popular TV show, and never existed in roman or greek mythology.

If it's determined that there are 12 planets, then it's about time we acknowledged the fact that planet earth has three moons - the moon that we all know, J002E2, and Cruithne [news.bbc.co.uk].

Actually the fact that you can look out in space and see Uranus, proves that space is curved :)
