Live Messenger uses IE, how to force it to default?

The newest installment of Microsoft's indecision on naming their services comes as Windows Live Messenger. When you click on the mail icon it automatically decides to open IE instead of the default browser. This results in a popup, non-maximized window, and at least two obnoxious banner ads that weren't block by Adblock Plus in Firefox. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to force it to use the default browser or at least a specific executable?
