The family keep asking, "what would you like for your birthday?"

What would you ask for?

Creative thinking for something unusual, special, memorable, shareable, etc.

Excluding world peace, health and happiness, which, for the sake of this exercise, we'll assume you want.

Right now I've got my eye on a 1923 Buick, but a 63 or 64 Avanti would be nice to.

How about a slushie machine? You can share the gift of brain freeze with your friends and family!

My husband came home from work with an industrial slushie machine. Huge beast. I won't try any of the slushies just on principle. He removed my microwave to install the thing!

Huge beast - is that the slushie machine or the husband? ;-)

Based on the book, how about the opportunity to actually visit all 1,000 places to see before you die?

A friend of mine is all about WW2 - facts to memorabilia to games. It's an obsession with him. For his birthday he was given a 45 minute ride in a MIG fighter. What more could he ask for?

My problem is that I may start out trying to be creative, and as the day draws closer I drift into WalMart mode, and something practical, like socks.

What would I like for my birthday? A 30 day free pass to visit anywhere I desire. Rooms, meals, transportation, film, everything free for 30 days.

The Sharper Image catalog always features a nice selection of "toys" to fantasize over...

Its memorable and definitely shareable. It may not be unusual but it's always special when someone gives you cold hard cash.

I like to disperse "C" Notes for Birthday gifts, they have the greatest impact.

You can always drop a few "C" Notes in my PayPal account too. I accept most currencies. :)

What color socks would I like? Blue is fine.

A day on the set of a favorite television show would be nice (Lost, CSI, Desperate Housewives etc.) You could lounge around and see the action live.

last year I made a list of available domain names that I was interested in. got two of them as yule gifts. also nice as a gift for your favourite geek: storage storage storage. external hard drives, flash drives, a stack of CDRs, etc - you can never have too much.
i take that back. I do have too many CDRs, what I would really like is a big all-in-one terabit RAID box

you can send a message by your choice of gift: a book of movie coupons (who doesn't like going to a movie?) is a nice hint to "get away from your computer for a night and take that girl out for a date!"

Neil - a day doing formula Ford [en.wikipedia.org] is a lot of fun (I think they still do days there at Brands for a couple of hundred quid). You can take the whole family (I think the kids do need a full driving licence though - not sure).

Alternatively, still on a motoring theme, how about hiring your dream car for a weekend? There are some specialist companies out there renting Ferraris, vintage Lambourgini's etc etc at semi-reasonable rates...

I haven't done this myself, but how about a hot air balloon ride over Oxford or Henley On Thames - for you and a loved one. You can enjoy some bubbly whilst up there too :)

...hot air balloon ride over Oxford or Henley On Thames...

Acquaintainces arranged to do exactly this, pretty much in that part of the world too. The only problem is that it's so weather-dependent. Some 12 months on from the scheduled date and the people I knew were still trying to get off the ground!
