Feels like...yuck. Intermittent brownouts, my UPS has saved my PC 16 times in the last two days.

Yeah, yuck is right. Last time I poked my head out it was 102 in Midtown Manhattan - talk about danged hot sidewalks, though I didn't see anybody trying to cook an egg. Should be cooling down to under 100 in the next hour or so.

<added>
And this is one time where the phrase "It's not the heat, it's the humidity" does not apply. It's the heat.

Here in Northern Florida my outdoor thermometers have been 100+ for a month now, and I expect them to stay that way until late October.....enjoy it
Brutal summers need to be managed! Live with the fact that no plant (other than Hibiscus) can flower in this heat, live with the fact that indoors in A/C is a good place to be, or in the pool!

I've been to Duluth In January many times, you can't go outside for more than a few minutes. Same is true of many areas to the south in the summer.....style your life around it

Heat is better than extreme cold IMHO, excessive heat can always be solved easily, excessive cold for months is hard to overcome.

Only around the 15C (around 60F I think) here in Adelaide Australia... quite a lovely, pleasant, mostly sunny day. :) A mild mid winter day. Just the kind of weather I love!

I feel sorry for you guys! But then, you'll be able to gloat once we get our summer heat waves here and start complaining.

Stay cool and drink lots! I'll be thinking of ya!

Crystal Pegasus.

Here in northern Germany it's pushing 35 Celsius, which is apparently 95 Fahrenheit. Maybe not as extreme as elsewhere, but unusually hot for here, and that in a country where airconditioning is a rarity. My room thermometer says 32 C... fortunately not (yet) humid.

In the UK we're looking at possibly breaking records for July. We have schools closing early, forest fires, roads melting and threats of powercuts.

It may be pushing 35 or 36 in some places, if the forecasters got it right, although not where I am. We're just not used to this kind of weather in Britain. Mad dogs and Englishmen, and all that.

How about the trains? I get the impression they make the tracks in Britain out of jelly or something which goes all melty at the slightest hint of sun.

Added: well, I'm off for a beer in a nice shady cafe.

Metcheck reports it's 32C here in central London (but it feels much, much hotter than that), and 35C across much of the South East of England.

At work I have the luxury of air-con - no such luck at home! Exactly as zCat in Germany, here air-con in the office is a rarity and at home almost non-existent.

<added>According to the BBC:

Britain is sweltering on its hottest recorded July day as temperatures hit 36.3 near Gatwick Airport.

A freidn of mine drove to Las Vegas a few weekends ago. On the way in the town of Baker, near the entrance to Death Valley, is a huge thermometer (the world's largest at 134 feet). It showed 120 degrees as he drove by.

I'm British, but, choose to live in Florida. I spoke to my family in the UK yesterday, and they are sweating buckets, while the temp here is much hotter, I'm cool all the time due to central A/C.

B&Q offer portable air conditioning for 199 pounds.....a very cheap solution to the heat and humidity. I wouldn't install it in Florida, but, to overcome a few weeks of nasty hot weather in the UK it will work!

The US builds homes to overcome the hot summers, Europe doesn't yet! But, if I lived there now I would be in line at B&Q for an air conditioner!

Why suffer when there is a 200 pound solution waiting for you?

Even better, for 350 pounds you can install a permanent split system with an all year/on/year solution......much cheaper than the USA.....do it, hot summers are a thing of the future.

It has been on the average 105 degrees fahrenheit, in the shade, for almost two weeks here in Southern Oregon, USA, with the topper yesterday and last Wednesday at 113. Cooled off a bit today. 100 degrees. :-)

On the up side, stepdaughter is off with her dad, wife and I have been skinny dipping in the pool every evening.

31.C in Little Chesterford, Essex at around 3pm today.

The company im working for currently wont allow air conditioning as 'its not enviromentally friendly' but running one big fan per desk is.....

Anyway got to 3.30pm and I went home.

We have had our hottest day this month since 1911, so how many can remember that!

Like essex says: because airconditioning is not environmentally friendly. It helps the global warming go faster...

Also, that will work for one room...in Florida and other areas the whole house has AC built in.

>Like essex says: because airconditioning is not environmentally friendly. It helps the global warming go faster...

Yeah, So suffer the heat, your car damages the environment more.....but, who cares....suffer the heat instead!

>Also, that will work for one room...in Florida and other areas the whole house has AC built in.

This is a valid point....in Florida we have to cool the whole house, but, that is an expensive solution. We do it because it is necessary year on year from late May to early October....there is no other choice. You can't live in Florida without A/C.

But, greens keep in mind that you can't live in northern Europe or the USA without heating in the Winter, and us folks in Florida can! We pay for cooling, we rarely pay for heating. We rarely burn fossil fuels for heating!

The single room A/C - cheap solution is aimed at those that live in more summer friendly climates.......e.g. The UK, or MN!

Buy 2 portable A/C units if moving the single unit is an issue.

It seems to me that many Europeans like to suffer in the heat. I'm a European, but, hate to suffer in the Florida heat, so either those over the pond haven't worked it out yet, or are just to skin-flint to fix it!

Remember the last few years in the UK......horribly hot in the summer! You think next year will be cool? How many years will it take you to realize that A/C is the only solution for you?

I love it when the outside temp reaches 100F!
Nice to have things cool back down :)
