What the best quality when saving CD to harddisc

and when we are at it, best quality when saving DVD to harddisc.

I know wav is best but thats a lot of MB per song, I need TOP quality, I know MP3 is not good.

a friend of mine always swore by shorten (shn) files

well there must not be any loss in quality, for a human ear.

There are several lossless audio compression methods available:

FLAC
SHN (Shorten)
TTA
Wavpack
Apple Lossless
Monkey's Audio

Or you could use mp3 with a higher bit rate.

is there no test out there where it is been compared, I have seen apple lossless which does sound interesting.

They are all supposed to be lossless so there should be no difference in quality otherwise they would not be lossless.

The only difference should be the compression.

It's like jpg and zip, where jpg compresses with reducing the quality of the picture and zip only compresses the file without any loss in quality.

I now made up my mind, the solution is FLAC with winamp plug in thats a good solution as what I can see compared to many other lossless software.

Just in case other where interested.
