I think it's been known to be possible for many years, but we haven't had the technology or surgical procedures until recently to do it.
It makes me wonder if, rather than using prosthetic limbs etc, you could take a signal out of the brain, down a wire to an electrical device which actually works the organic muscle by pulsing it electrically. So basically you replace the spinal cord/nerve system with a man-made communications device but still use the original limb.
