I have no idea what of my dozens background application make a strange sound every like 3-4 hours and somehow randomly. I have all windows sounds shutdown.
I always have at least 5-6 applications opened, like Ms Excel, Internet Explorer, FireFox, Visual Studio or Delphi, SQL Server tools, Ms Word, etc. etc.
In the background I have ICQ, MSN, Skype, ZoneAlarm, IDrive, RSS reader, Babylon, etc. etc.
But I can't figure out which of these applications is making this strange noise and what the heck does it mean!
It goes like: tá/taratá/taratá/taratá-tá

This is not a joke! :)

Have you closed the apps one by one until the sound stops?

Aaah! I know that noise. To me it sounds like a robot trying to describe a horse galloping: Duuuuuuut, da-lut, da-lut- da-lut etc. Somebody with a cell phone passes near the computer, and the speakers pick up and amplify the sound.

So much for FCC part 13!

My career fixing widgets would be SO much easier, if people were not ashamed to try to imitate the noise the way you did. :)

LOL, I couldn't work out what description of tá/taratá/taratá/taratá-tá
was, but, now you mention it, the cellphone does communicate with the nearest base station on a regular basis. You'll also hear it when your phone is next to a radio receiver.

I have a full time job and work at home too.
Both computers are almost identical regarding software installed, but of course there should be differences.
I have the cell phone next to me all the time and just the computer on the full time job does the sound!

Have you tried these?

  • Perform a full system search for wav files, then start checking those puppies. That shouldn't take too long... It worked for me once.
  • Get a tin-foil hat for your monitor. Possibly one for yourself.

    I hope that helps.

I think that might be the sound the fan makes when the breeze it makes collides with the chewing gum that's holding the processor down to the motherboard.

    tá/taratá/taratá/taratá-tá

sounds like the opening bars of Sibelius' violin concerto (affectionately also called Jaws)

Get a tin-foil hat for your monitor.

Actually if it was grounded, it would serve as a faraday cage and cure the problem. Probably wrapping and grounding the audio cables, especially the input to the amplified speakers would suffice.

This is probably one of the five times out of millions on the internet when the tinfoil hat advice is actually appropriate. :)
