Rant On.

It happened again. I went away for a little R&R and everything went to Hell in a Handbasket.

  • Three years ago my ISP changed the way that PHP worked, and only my true html documents were available. That effectively cut off about 90% of my site. (Some of you may remember my panic in the days just before I left)
  • Last year the boss crashed my local MySql database. (Some of you may remember my panic when I returned)
  • This year my connection to authorize.net failed, and no CC orders were completed. Thank God for PayPal! (It doesn't pay to panic)

Two years ago? I didn't go anywhere, and nothing went kaput. Which of the Internet Gods do you suppose I have run afoul of?

    Rant Off.

Going away? What a strange old-fashioned notion. Haven't been anywhere without some form of Internet connection for a few years now... Earlier this year I flew half-way round the world for a change of scene - with my trusty laptop of course - arrived on Friday, late on Saturday afternoon while still jetlagged check my sites, everything OK; more by chance checked them an hour or so later; zilch; the server (dedicated) seemed to have vanished from the Internet, even the remote reset service didn't work; fortunately the time difference meant there was still a tech on site who did a manual reset for me; everything worked about half an hour, then the same; repeat two or three times while trying to convince the tech whatever was wrong was not due to my software crashing the server; eventually turned out my remote diagnosis that the CPU fan had died was correct, and fortunately it was replaced PDQ.

I'm still proud of that diagnosis, it was pure deduction aided by too much experience with crashing server hardware.

The hard drive on my notebook went out a while back. I had the choice of spending $600 for a new drive from Toshiba, or buying a brand new Dell workstation. I went for the Dell. I'm happy with the choice, except now I don't know how I'll ever be able to travel again.
