One of the worst moments in big time sports. Zindane will never live that down.

Too bad, I was pulling for France.

Now that was just rude. Of course, I had to watch it several times...

What the hell happened to Zidane? Did Materazzi say something about his mother?

>>What the hell happened to Zidane?

Lost his mind I guess, and it likely cost them the game too.

Did Materazzi say something about his mother?

Obviously it was was something that incensed him immediately!

And apart from the obvious penalties, just how the hell did Italy win? They were appalling all the way through the tournament except in the Germany game.

Call me old and cynical however the life has gone from this sport, apart from a very few good games, the only ones who seem to derive anything from it are over-paid sports commentators.

My interest was waning before, now it's been snuffed out.

However bad that was, you have to say it was one of the few 'genuine' moments of the tournament. He was clearly incensed by something, it's a shame the referees didnt take the same approach to the diving that spoiled the world cup for many!

I cannot understand that. Even if Materazzi insulted him or his mother or whomever in the most obscene way - this was the World Cup final and supposed to be the last match of his career. You just don't loose your temper that way.

They were appalling all..

I think Italy did very well in this match. If it wasn't the penalty shot in the first couple minutes of the match, Italy would have won the match in 90 minutes.

>>I think Italy did very well in this match

Completely disagree.

In the last 75 minutes of play Italy barely touched the ball. They are lucky France did not get one more in the many chances they had.

Diving and insults won the day.

He'll soon identify with that country song; "What was I Thinking"!

I think Italy did very well in this match.

Raymond, are you Italian?

It was a typically boring defensive Italian game...if this is what you want to see then watch it by yourself since it is not good for the spectators nor the game and I cannot believe how many young people I have spoken to tonight who have said the same.

This has been a very bad example for the future of the so-called "greatest sporting event on earth"...FIFA have a problem!

OptiRex ---

they won. '.'

Zedane was one of the most interesting players to watch this time around. What ever italian could have said, it is not the way to settle an issue.

We play this sport in the local park all year round 2-3 times a week, from many countries we are.

Is head butting a football or Euro thing? I was very impressed by his quickness. Caught his victim utterly off guard.

I think Materazzi may have nipped (pinched) his chest in the seconds leading up to this. This does happen and the Italians are apparently good at it. Look at it again. After it happens Zidane looks round and puts his hand palm upwards as though appealling. He then walks away, but if it did happen then it would still be on his mind.

This is not an excuse and he should have had more sense but it may have been that after he thought about it he just boiled up inside.

I would have to diagree as I think the Italians have played some very entertaining and excellent football througout the tournament with the exception of a couple of games.

They are deserved winners.

As for Zidane.....what a way to end such a glorious international career. At least there can be no question as to whether it was deliberate or not! ;-)

It now seems that Zidane was sent off after the fourth/fifth official used a TV replay. This is illegal so the red card may be illegal.

lol. Yeah, it's like he'd planned and practiced that move for years. "Oh yeah, well... I'll head butt you in the chest!"

I guess I'd expect football players to have good aim and quickness with their heads. I'll have to remember that.

So what's the difference between this particular headbutt and all those vicious kicks on the shin we've seen in such abundance? Just more stylish.

This is illegal so the red card may be illegal.

I don't think that'll make a whole load of difference in the circumstances - no-one can really dispute that his sending off was the correct decision, however it was arrived at.

I can't really see France making an argument out of it.

Does anyone have another angle of it? I only watched the first half of this game and got bored and went out and got drunk..

Probably not since it could make things worse. We had a case in Scotland about 10 years ago when a high profile player head butted another player, got charged by the police and eventually jailed because he had some previous. His headbutt was kind of half hearted, more of a gesture, but he still ended up doing time.

What impressed me was the instant effect it had. Looked like he was seriously winded. Must try it sometime.

There was also a bit of acting involved by Materazzi ;)

A bit? ;)

If I hadn't seen the headbutt itself, I'd have thought Materazzi was shot in the chest!

Vinnie Jones had better watch out! He now has some serious competition for the role of the Juggernaut in the next X-Men film!

BBC Radio Five Live got a lip reader and Italian translator to try to see what Materazzi said - [news.bbc.co.uk...]

She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.

"you're the son of a terrorist whore"

If this is true then this is the big deal.

But, but, but...

By his own admission, Materazzi has been living in a cave for at least the last five years:

[...] and I don't even know what as Islamist terrorist is.

And to insult someone mother?!

For me the mother is sacred, you know that.

Ok, ok, he did say something, but...

It was one of those insults you're told tens of times and that always fly around the pitch.

Poor Materazzi - don't shoot him, he's only the messenger!
