Manilow method n. The discouragement of loitering in public places by broadcasting music that is offensive to young people, particularly the songs of singer Barry Manilow.

Years ago I heard that a Mall got rid of loitering teens by playing the theme song from the U.S. TV show "Mister Ed" over and over. (or was it "Gomer Pyle USMC?")

What was the noise the U.S. military bombarded Noriega's palace in Panama with year ago?

Corner store near my old high school used to play classical music to "scare" away the loitering students.

McDonalds on the busy street downtown also plays classical music, but it doesn't seem to help.

Their tastes run much heavier than Manilow - hard rock & heavy metal are called for, with AC/DC being their true favourite. Shoot To Thrill echoes nightly through Baghdad...

This is probably not such an issue today with everyone walking around with Ipods or whatever...and earphones...(listening to Barry Manilow music privately ;-)
