On edit: Diving and cheating still going on and it's disgusting. Red card on the first dive would be the punishment if I had a choice. You'll see how fast it stops.
I am sure the France v Italy will be a good match and much will depend on Zidane but my money is on Italia!

I have to admit, it is almost like Portugal got a dose of its own medicine. Some Portuguese players dove on the box also. It is disgusting.
They really have to clean football up, the dives and theatricals are ruining the game.
I am all for giving immediate red cards for the cheaters after a replay review. It would clean it up in no time.

I agree. Diving is not just being a wee bit naughty. It's trying to win a game through downright cheating. The guys who do it, and there are many of them, should be punished. Is football the only game where proven, persistent cheats go unpunished?

Once you start with technology and video replays where does it stop? Every contraversial decision?
Rugby and cricket are very different games, as there is much more stop and start to the game. The best football should flow.
I do think that any player caught diving with the use of above technology post-match should be banned from all matches at club and Int level for x number of games.

It does flow but it stops for a free kick or a penalty and replays could be organised while the players are still protesting to the ref.

Sadly not as well as Henry. I always think that it is worse when skilled players like him resort to these tactics.
Let's not forget that this is not a continental trait. Remember Gerrard's theatrical dive in one of England's warm up games?

Just for the record. I do not know why people think Gerard dived in a friendly just a few weeks away from the World Cup. What you think he should have allowed himself to be clobbered by the guy, miss the world cup possibly?
If we talk about diving let's at least keep the discussion on games that count.
If Ronaldo stays with Man Utd it will be interesting to see how Rooney gets on with him in training and how Man Utd and other supporters react to him playing.
Us English supporters always ssem to need a scapegoat for our failure. This time it is Ronaldo, it is easy to dislike him though.
As for the "losers" match between Germany and Portugal, it's hard to imagine how the players will be able to motivate themselves. If I was Portugese I would be wanting only to get home as soon as possible.

It sure sucks losing on a penalty which was not. It is obvious Henry dove - he is a pro at it.
Huh? The ref made a spot-on decision - watch the replays! The point of a tackle is to get the ball. If you miss the ball and take your player out, that be a foul.
I was well disappointed with how Portugal played last night. Not great football at all. It seemed their attitude was most unsporting - but then look at how Scolari acted throughout the night - very poor. I was, however, quite impressed by France - having a shaky start to the tournament, they seem to be proving themselves now. I think we're in for a right proper treat on Sunday - if Italy play as well as they did on Tuesday, and France as well as they did yesterday, it should be quite exciting!

Ronaldo seems to have become the villain of this tournament. Was it just English fans booing, or all types of fans? Any insight?
How can you compare Gerrard to Ronaldo when it comes to diving? I wonder what the dive count would be if you compared them? Is there an axe to grind somewhere?
The topic was diving and I made no comparison with Gerrard and Ronaldo. All I did was to point out one significant, recent instance of this by a respected English player.
This is just as prevalent in the UK, including Scotland, as any other country. You cannot turn a blind eye to that while demonising players from other countries as though they were somehow different. If there is an axe to grind it is that the English media (and many of their fans) seem to be collectively blind to these events when the England team is involved. Unless of course they are of such a high profile that they cannot be ignored, like Rooney's sending off.
Try putting yourself in the position of the Trinidad and Tobago fans who saw their team go behind late in the game against England to a goal that was scored by a guy who was clearly leaning on their defender and pulling his hair. What do you think the English media would have made of that if it had been the other way round? Maradona committed a lesser foul to score against England in the '86 finals and they are still talking about it twenty years later.

Yes but we all break the occasional rule and we all know Gerard is not a regular or known in any way for diving. And like I said it was a friendly, and if he had stayed on his feet he would have had a penalty and perhaps a serious injury.
As it is he did dive out of the way but only to avoid the injury. It was a friendly and not worth missing the world cup anyway.
Point was - where do video replay's stop? Which part of the field? Which offenses? I think once it starts it will never stop and will turn football into a farcical.
Ban them after the matches - and deduct points from a team if necessary but I do not want to see stop start football.
I hope the refer-ee keeps the whistle in his shorts.

not at all, i've seen henry and arsenal many, many times live, although an arsenal fan i have perspective and have seen quite a few dives at highbury from the home side, however never from henry, he is not a cheat.

Are you sure? What about the dive/tumble he took which resulted in a free kick that won the match over Spain?
On Sunday we will see not only a winning country but an ethos towards sport from the two nations - as both coaches are home grown. It's good to know that as much attention will be paid to the style of victory as to the victory itself. A sign of progress maybe.
