Japanese hot dog hero Takeru Kobayashi remained the undefeated champion of the World Cup of wieners yesterday - but the great American glutton nearly gave him a frank wakeup call.

Barely besting his own record of 53-1/2 hot dogs, set in 2004, Kobayashi shoved 53-3/4 Nathan's wieners in his mouth in 12 minutes - and narrowly beat California up-and-comer Joey Chestnut, who scarfed down 52.
