Anyone see Argentina - Mexico? Best match of the tournament, so far. The Mexicans didn't care about Argentina being the favourites and simply played great, offensive football. But Argentina kept cool and came back. Good referee, too. Me thinks this is how the game should be played.
Argentina - Germany could be a great quarter final!

Like with Beckham brushing Simone's leg in 98 and getting a red card. Some common sense would give them both yellow cards in any normal league match.
But every world cup the real cheats never get punished. The players pretending to be hurt, diving and pressuring the referee to give a card.
1)He was a big disappointment on the field (he may have been put in an awkward position as the lone striker but he didn't have to give the ball away every time it was passed to him)
In his international career there is little evidence that he is Englands great hope for the future.
2) He deserved to get sent off on two counts. He deliberately stamped on the guy's family jewels and he pushed Ronaldo. I know this to be true because I saw it on TV live. The other guy was able to get up again and continue because he was wearing a box which will give reasonable protection. But the attempt to hurt was there and the "Spud faced nipper" should hang his head in shame, own up and apologise.
The new England manager should now issue a statement saying that we do not want cheats in our national team and Rooney will therefore not be considered for selection for at least a year after which his recent record will be taken into account. If he can't act like a reasonable human being he will never play for his country again.
The guy clearly has some talent but is also very flawed and he is not the England team, as Erickson would have us all believe.
I wonder where Rooney will be in five years time. Do you think a flake like him can hold it together that long? Watch this space ;)
Added - Did I just see Elvis in the crowd?
Actually it was Lord Lucan, sitting on Shergar's back :)
Remember Gazza?
Remember him?
I watched him at Glasgow Rangers when he played some of the best stuff of his career and he did have a reasonably long career. (He used to stay about two miles from me and all he wanted to do at that time was go trout fishing).
What I don't like to remember is the goal he scored for England against Scotland at Euro 1996. It was a belter! :(
He was a big disappointment on the field
He had just recovered from a broken foot.
I'm really p*ssed off with all the apologists for Rooney.
I'm not.
issue a statement saying that we do not want cheats in our national team
That would be fair to say of the Portugal team.

Lets hope he doesn't follow the path of Willie Woodburn ;-)
Well done Italy what a smashing game one of the best by far. Commiserations to Germany you did your country proud.
I think it will be an Italy France final. What a fantastic final that would be the way both teams are playing.
It was a belter! :)
Gary McAllister's penalty miss must have given you some grief too ;-)
Certainly the best match of the tournament so far tonight, seeing Elvis in attendance just topped it off for me.
I am done with predictions.
<strike>Brazil</strike> no, make that <strike>Germany</strike> no no Italia!
What a match. The team that plays 4-2-4 in a World Cup semi-final deserves to win. Kudos to Germany too, they've played better than most people expected.
[added]Bild.de: "Schade Jungs! Ihr habt gekämpft wie Weltmeister"
gazzetta.it: "La più bella! Fantastica! Straordinaria!"
That sums it up nicely.[/added]
Vive le France
actually that would be Vive la France :)
could someone translate this:
Bild.de: "Schade Jungs! Ihr habt gekämpft wie Weltmeister"
gazzetta.it: "La più bella! Fantastica! Straordinaria!"
My German and Italian are rusty.
Does this mean?
Bild.de: Well played young ones - you made us proud"
Gazzeta.it: The most beautiful! Fantastic! Extraordinary!.
stir, stir, stir
How surprising! Mind you that is exactly what Portugal will do. They could not even beat England with 10 men in regular and extra time.
I hope it is a good game and we do not see any stupid refereeing like in past games. But as you say Portugal will stir, stir, stir.....
The ref in last nights game was excellent.
I also hope if France do win, that Zidane does not get a yellow card as he would miss the final.
I'm watching the Portugal vs France match and I would like to call, again, for a third referee, such as those used in rugby or cricket. The third referee is called upon to watch the replay and would be able to see if the player was faking it. He then reports back to the referee if it's a dive or penalty.
