"The Great Gig in the Sky"
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon - 1973
I can't think of another tune that even comes close. The keyboard (piano) is enchanting, the rhythm blends well, and the vocals are simply awesome (thank you Claire for working on Sunday). Originally titled, "The Mortality Sequence", were it my song I would have called it "The Great Orgasm". Of course, that might not have got past the censors of the early 70's.
Help me out, is there another rock tune that fits this category?
I've got 'Happpy Birthday - by Stevie Wonder' on. It's beutiful, but then I just listened to 'Lately', just before it, it too is beautiful, made me cry anyway.
One is happy and the other is sad but they are both, kind of, beautiful.
:)
"The most beautiful" depends on what you think is beautiful
I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got runned over by a danged ol train
Country song writing should have faded into history the day that song came out. What else is there to say in a country way?
The problem with picking a "beautiful" rock & roll song is that most rock songs speak to the moment. So "beautiful" depends on where you've been and what mood you're in right now.
Some of the songs by Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, RUSH, and others mentioned in this thread escape the "moment" thing. And they stand alone from the others.
Rock on.
Just a thought.
In the Intrumental category, I'll go with Albatross by Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green.
Runner-up: White Bird by It's a Beautiful Day (not exactly rock tho, izzit?)
Beautiful and Rock and Roll are two terms that are easily defined, but difficult to pin down. For me, the Rock and Roll era began with the Beatles, although I clearly respect the earlier contributions of Elvis, Chuck Berry, and others. The blues, in general, contributed as much to Rock and Roll as did LSD and morphine. Personally, I draw lines at Rap, Techno and Dance, and Disco!
Beautiful? It's in the eyes (or the ears) of the beholder. I've seen a few tunes here that wouldn't make the cut, to my ear. That makes them none the less beautiful to someone else. Another example of beautiful would be with the Led Zepplin contributions. I love Stairway to Heaven, but Zepplin compiled so many great tunes. To my ear, Since I've been Loving You, has always been just a cut above. Could be because it didn't get as much airplay..?
Anyway, from the contributions to this thread I've compiled my own Most Beautiful Rock, Vol 1. Here's what I included.
The Great Gig in the Sky
Your Song
Hey Jude
Drift Away
Since I've Been Loving You
A Whiter Shade of Pale
Wishing You Were Here
Rivera Paradise
Black Magic Woman
The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Unchained Melody
Me and Bobby McGee
This Masquerade
I decided after some experimentation to include only one song from any artist. This keeps my list from sounding like another Pink Floyd album :)
I like Lady Elanor by Lindisfarne - weird lyric though.
