New Keyboard Layouts

And buying a new PC / laptop

I've just bought a new PC from Dell and the keyboard has a Carriage Return key (labelled 'Enter') which only occupies one row, above the shift, and has placed the forward-slash key above the Carriage Return/Enter key. I'm constantly pressing forward-slash instead of enter.

I also typed on someone else's laptop today - the keys were smaller than standard keys and the main QWERTY lines were misaligned (incorrect offset between rows).

I put it to Foo that keyboard layouts should never be changed, and be defined by a strict international standard, as it just confuses people!

Seconded!

While we're about it - is there any way that we could make touchpads on laptops all "feel" and react the same?

It took me about 3 weeks to get fully used to my new laptop.

Agree - should be an industry or "standard" layout.

Disagree that there should be an industry standard imposed on everyone (as a number of people may prefer new positioning). However, a standard option SHOULD be available for detachable keyboards (since Dell allows you to customize just about everything else, they hsould offer the option for the standardized keyboards for those who want them). Then people can vote with their wallets.
