These images, taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, show the Galle Crater, an impact crater located on the eastern rim of the Argyre Planitia impact basin on Mars.

Crater Galle, named after the German astronomer J.G. Galle (1812-1910), is informally known as the 'happy face' crater.

From ESA [esa.int].

Um, looks like a "smiley" to me. Still, at least it's much cheerier than that Cydonian [mufor.org] one!

:)

I'm so glad that it's a smiley. I'd hate to think it was an unhappy crater! ;)

Where does that leave the copyright of smilies?

I've seen faces in almost all of the Mars terrain images. I thought it might be just me, so I stayed quiet. I spent one evening contemplating the possibility of a life as a face on Mars.. what a long dull boring life that would be.

Hmmm, I probably should have stayed quiet.

Um, looks like a "smiley" to me.

Its the new WalMart store site. Don't you know they are the first ones on the scene.

well...this is self confirmation that I have a dense sense of perception. I don't see the smiley face.

Looks more like the cross section of a certain piece of the human anatomy to me.
