Last week a client asked me to take her business website down, primarily because she got a very good job with a new firm and also because she got tired of all the spam. Anyway, I took the site down.

Less than a week later I was asked to put it up again...ASAP! Why? Because the person is applying for a home mortgage and evidently the loan process will not proceed without the bank taking a look at the site!

I haven't heard yet why the bank is requiring a website, perhaps a way to prove years of self-employment. Whatever the reason, I thought this was very interesting.

Yes, she probably tried to claim an income stream from it, is all.

Actually, no. That is not the case at all.

The 10 page website is simply an online brochure. It is as I expected, that the bank wants additional proof of self-employment. You'd think tax returns would be enough. I still find it fascinating that the bank wants to see a little website.

I have also heard this from a recent tradesman who came to do some work on my house.

When he applied to upgrade his overdraft and mortgage with his bank and they also regarded his web site as a must see part of their investigations.

What is the world comng too!

Last summer, my untouched-since-1999 personal site, my first ever, came in very handy during a deposition (consumer protection; class plaintiff).

The defendant's attorney asking about my employment history and post-grad education, wanting dates and who-what-wheres -- all those questions initially gave me pause because it's been a _l_o_n_g_ time since I dusted off all those details.

Then I remembered: My first site! My still-current resume's online!

Giving them the URL made quick work of that part of the proceedings. (And thankfully that old site still looks pretty much A-OK. And even more thankfully, the defendant settled:)
