The following is a story told by the late Milton Berle:
“Detzo,” Milton recalled with that fabulous memory of his, “got on a train one day in Grant Central in New York to make an engagement someplace upstate. There was an empty coach and Detzo sat in it all alone. At the next stop, 125th Street, a keeper got on the train with a dozen mental patients, and occupied the coach with Detzo. All were bound for the nuthouse in Mattewan, New York.”It should be explained here that Detzo was a contortionist who had a fantastic act. He came on stage, gave himself a couple airplane spins, a toehold and a half-nelson. His finish came when he pinned himself to the mat and counted himself out, to heavy applause.
“Detzo rode on the train for several hours with the mental patients,” Milton said. The train finally stopped at Mattewan, and the keeper tapped all his patients to get off, and Detzo too. This infuriated Detzo, who flew into a rage and began to act like a crazy man. The keeper summoned two orderlies who had met the train. They threw a net over Detzo and hauled him off the train. All the while, he kept screaming: “I am Detzo Ritter, the man who wrestles with himself!”
