hi all,

this is a strange one for a friday afternoon. i am sitting in my 2nd floor office and we have a new housing estate being built behind us.

when they are moving their diggers around, my building is vibrating slightly. It's not too bad but feels a little strange. it only last a few second at a time as they don't move very far, very quick.

does anyone know if this is supposed to happen if the diggers are about 150 meters away?

I used to live in an urban area and it happened several times. Nothing to worry about unless you want to sleep.

Just be sure the builders know what they are doing ;)

>my building is vibrating slightly

That is fine, it is when the power goes out and the first floor starts crumbling under you that you need to be concerned.

You could try offering the builders beer on-site. You will find the vibrations stop almost immediately. You will also discover that the job takes ten+ times as long to complete :)

I used to live a block where when freight trains went past the whole place shook, every week I had push things back on to the shelving the flat.

Had a major roadwork outside my appartment a couple of months back. It vibrated a lot, they sent some engineer checking the house out before they started. The house still stands :)

Our house is a good 200-300 yards from where some fairly minor construction was done a few years ago. (I know that's not a very good estimate, but I'm bad with distances... ;) ) We're located across a very large parking lot from the construction site and across a wide, densely-forested ravine. Our side of the ravine is at least 20-30 feet higher than the construction side of the ravine. Despite all this, our house regularly shook and vibrated as they moved heavy equipment around and sometimes even when they just dropped portions of garbage into the backs of their huge dump trucks. (That is, large pieces of garbage, dropped from cranes.)
