Facebook's plan to unify its systems with Instagtram and WhatsApp [webmasterworld.com] has hit some buffers in Germany. The country's competition regulator, the Bundeskartellamt, says Facebook is prohibited from combining the user data from different sources in to Facebook. Users have to give voluntary consent, and simply agreeing to the terms and conditions is not adequate.
Currently, this is only Germany, but quite likely to spread within the E.U., if not elsewhere.

So regulators have realised that social networks are monopolies, and that chat and social networks compete? About time.

Incidentally this is the competition regulator, not the privacy regulator.
