What causes foreign Google spiders to visit?

Do I need links from directories or sites in each language? Or will links from our English dot-com site to our foreign language sites be enough?

I guess it depends how the foreign Google spiders function. Are there separate spiders for each language, and they only visit sites in that language?

Follow-up question: Do the spiders pass the browser language parameter to the webserver being broswed? (in case we decide to deliver the language on that basis)

AFAIK, there is only one set of Google spiders/bots.

Google bots do not set a language in the User-Agent field.
