I've tried to get into the MSN directory for Norway.
But it seems like MSN have some kind of deal with looksmart. And they wont take sites written in norwegian (or almost any other european language). But still, when you performe a search on MSN you get results from their "web-directory" listed first. But what kind of directory is this, and how do I get into it? I've checked MSN-search denmark and sweden and it seems like you have the same problem. If there is anyone who can give me a tip I am greatfull. Thanks

Hello snappa,

msn is partnering with a lot of directories all over Europe. In Germany they use a local directory "Alles Klar". The Yellow pages are also provided by a country specific partner.

I couldn't find a "submit" link in the Norway (or any other edition). Where did you submit? Can you provide a link?

If they use Looksmart in Norway please be aware of the new Looksmart policy. Business sites will need to pay to be listet.

Regards,

Ulli

Thank you, I will do some more research on this (they gotta get their results from somewhere). I let you know if I find out something.

This is the problem! I tried the "help" section on their pages, and it told me to follow the link "legge til url" (add url) on their mainpage. But it's not there. And it also said that the link will take you to Looksmart's submit page. But there is no norwegian Looksmart. And the american edition want take norwegian language. But as I said, I'll check out any other norwegian directory service and see if their providing the results for MSN-Norge.

This sounds very strange and I am sure we would all like to hear what you find out about this. BTW: I have left you a welcoming note in the Norway thread.

I have been all over msn.no and no add url page. Then I remembered. MSN gets their search results from Inktomi. So the real question is: How does one get into Inktomi? You may wish to check the Inktomi forum for that, but I remember seeing something about Canada.com being the best route to take. (I am doing awfully well in MSN myself - #3 on first page for the most frequent keyword - and I think I was autosubmitted via SubmitIt, probably via Canada.com - 18 months ago.)

PS: Just checked Looksmart and you can forget about them, as you have already discovered. But that is no problem, because if you search msn.no with a word or phrase in Norwegian, all of the replies will come from Inktomi and none from the Looksmart directory, since they do not take non-English sites.

Hi rencke,

didn't I meet you at IMS2000 in Stockholm? ;) Lokksmart was there and they told us that BTLooksmart (Their European company) builds directories for nearly all countries in Europe but will not open own portals. They will just provide the data to partners.

On the msn.no homepage you can do the spider search and it will use different engines (choose from the dropdown box). On the search.msn.no page they will return results from a katalog and from a spider. But I couldn't find any information on the directory used.

Ulli

Yes Wisser, I do believe we met there. ;)

> builds directories for nearly all countries in Europe
Yes but I haven't found any place of contact, which snappa can use.

> use different engines (choose from the dropdown box
I was referring to the default: MSN Search = Inktomi

The other ones, like Euroseek, we will deal with one by one in this forum.
