Approximate CNO Websites Count For Europe

The com/net/org domains counts for European countries have now been analysed for websites. The figures below give the approximate websites count for each European country. The existence of CNO registrars in some countries tends to make the count of domains registered in that particular country a bit high but a further refinement of the calculation model should result in a more precise value for each country. This survey initially excludes the majority of the European owned websites hosted outside Europe. (This is the complex part of the model I am working on at the moment.)

I have not given the figures for Ireland as I use a slightly more advanced model for this country. Looks like putting together a pan-European search engine is going to require a bigger computer. ;)

Very interesting statistics jmcc thank you for posting them.

My first reaction was to get an idea of how many websites each country had registered compared with its population size. A quick stats analysis ranks them as follows.

This is websites per 1,000 head of population.

The figures are as yet preliminary ones. The Swiss count seems a bit high and I am refining the algorithm for the Swiss count. Basing it purely on the RIPE IP data is causing an abnormally high figure and I would expect the overall count for Swiss domains to go down to a more reasonable figure in the region for 50K domains registered. The registrar problem (where a domain will be registered on on registrar in one country and the website hosted in another) is also helping to identify domains that while registered in one country are actually more related to another.

Relying on IP details alone to establish the relevance of a website to a country induces a serious error margin. Unfortunately this is the basis that many of the bigger search engines are using (that and the cctld) to create a fast and nasty 'pages from $country' search index. The Irish usage is a good example of this as many Irish websites are hosted on webservers in the UK. These would be classed as being UK websites (since they are in UK IP space) rather than Irish IP space. Similar patterns are emerging for other European countries.
