Dear Estonians:

My heartfelt congratulations to tonight's victory in the Eurovision Song Contest 2000. For a small country to do so well in this very competitive mega-event - two years in row - is simply astounding. But perhaps something that we should have expected from a nation that owed its independence, in no small part, to the sound of music and singing.

One year from now, you will be the hosts of this gigantic show, which - with its 200 million television audience - will bring to your country the international recognition, for which you have fought so hard, for so long - partly on the streets of my own hometown - and which you so richly deserve.

I salute you, and look forward to next year's show in Tallin.
