Anybody knows anything about them?
no deepindex is not a pay for play.
We are crawling freely once a month (mainly from DMOZ and followed links).
We also have paid inclusion, but unlikely to other, we do it for one hole site if paid, and not only for one page.
Otherwise DeepIndex project started in april 2002 (4 months ago) and after a few starting bugs it came out.
Majorly we are tracking french sites, but we started recently to crawl all sites and we should deliver deepindex search in other languages.
For myself i'm working on searchengines and directories for about 5 years. So it is really not a start up and down project.
Sorry for my rusty english, i'll try to improve it in the next months.
Best regards
Gilbert
is there any way to tip Deep Index off to the existence of a French section on a multilingual site?...or do we simply have to wait until the crawl gets deep enough to see the second layer on sites that aren't French language only?
glad to see it's not paid only...and crawled without submissions might produce an interesting index
Thanks for clarifying this. I just visited your site and found for some searches very different results compared with searching at Francite.
In fact Deepindex gives considerably less results.
Another question: the directory at Deepindex.com- is it built from ODP data? If not any way to get in there?

As long as you realise the importance of doing free crawls for keeping up the quality of the index ;)

yes i know the the french datas are coming up on most queries and we are working on for serating the languages more properly. This will be helped when there'll be more english spoken sites are getting in.
For the case of Francité : it is not the same database. Thats why the answers on queries are not the same. An harmonisation of both databases is previewed in September.
For the directory : Sorry the directory comes from my other site (france-sites.com) and was build up on 2 years. I still get a feed of 200 sites (more or less) every day. But i really prefere on working on deepindex wich is a very interesting project. In any way the english spoken directory (if i get managed my timing 24/24 :-) ) is in the starting block but i need people to work with me on that side.
Actually we are 2 personnes working 24/24 on the french side + 2 in Canada. And i don't have the money to pay more people, that's why i prefere paid inclusion. There is also a second team who is working on the developpement of the next version of deepindex which should be online within this year coming up with JS crawling and other nice things which Google doesn't do. I see your replies already... No we don't have the aim to conter google (which is a great engine), we must first make the users happy and it is much to early to predict DeepIndex on an international scene. But here in France and Canada it looks good... ;-) Wait and See.
For the last fact : Free or not Free. Thats the question :-). I think that a searchengine should have free part, but must have paid parts. Building a searchengine (national or worldwide) costs a lot of money. Once it's online and running it's cost a lot in developping new versions or mainting DB and of course a little of communication, and don't forget, i love french food... ;-) So yes we don't bloc free submission, but we rather prefere a 30/70 rate of paid inclusion/free inclusion (i think we are cheaper than... (sorry i might not tell you, it's forbidden in France)).
For the relavancy : Keyword should be in title and body. Spamdexing not allowed, people can tell us if they feel spamdexed.

in reply to eric, we are actually in discussion with an european partner (coming from england...) to kick off multilingual DeepIndex. Our hope is to start the first big crawl before the end of the year (probably english or german version). I hope to give you some certain and precise news by this week.
