Hi rencke,

found two other engines. They are a bit weird. www.ina-netz.de and www.tigersuche.de both have their own database (ins-netz directory, tigersuche spider) but will do a
meta search in alataviste, fireball, google, fast first and then mix these results with results from their own database. So they are not really meta searchers but although no directory /spider searchengines either.

Any ideas how to handle them?

Think, think, think..... I guess the minimum requirement for something to be a search engine would be that they have a spidered index. The index is what all of us want to know about. Therefore, pure meta search engines would not qualify, but ina-netz ang tigersuche would, even though they are using the results from other engines.

What do you think?

maybe we should just compile a list of Meta searchengines. Obviously no positioning information is needed. But could be interessting to know about them.

ins-netz and tigersuche qualify as searchengines. Just some additional comment in the "search technology" section.

yes I forgot to say: the numbers in the list are pageviews per month - not unique visitors!
I am searching for numbers of unique visitors but I didnīt find it yet.

Have updated the chart with Ina-netz and Tigersuche and corrected my mistake regarding the statistics. Page views is problably quite sufficient, since the purpose would really only be to establish the relative size of the search engines. I have also started a thread for Meta Search Engines with the help of the info above.

Picked up this from your link oLeon. The first figure is visits during Sept 2000, the second is page impressions and the third is page impressions per visit. The don't show unique visitors. Either of these two figures would be fine. For our purpose, I guess the number of page impressions might the best? What do you think? One thing we have to remember is that we can get the same measurement for other engines from somewhere, but which one and from where?

Hi rencke,

I think page impression would be the best. But we won't get the same measurement for other countries. Germany had a lot of discussions about measurement of the web and it settled for a standard called "ivw". It is triggered by a small one x one pixel gif. The standard is widely used in Germany. If you want to sell banners in Germany you got to provide ivw-numbers.

MSN in Germany will only search the MSN catalog. The catalog is provided by "Alles Klar". So maybe msn.de should be moved to Germany categories and made "see Alles Klar".

Are you really sure about this? I did my standard quickie test for the word "sweden" (because I know by heart which sites should be on the first page if the engines are OK and if the webmasters haven't f****** up) After the header "Webverzeichnissites" there were just a few sites and then a line followed by "Webverzeichnissites (US)" - i.e. their main index in the US. (btw: Guess who ranks #1 under that line?) It seems to me that we have to find out if MSN.com should be viewed as an SE or as a directory. "Verzeichnis" means directory or catalogue, doesn't it?

Also: Do they take any secondary results from Inktomi at all? Couldn't see any trace of it, unless what comes under "Webverzeichnissites (US)" is actually Inktomi.

I think itīs all right what you wrote. Itīs a spammed searchengine with strange results.

yes, itīs a problem with measurement in Germany, wisser is absolutly right.
ivw is a standard, and I want to recommend the page impressions, too.
Though I think visits is the number where you can suspect how many user were on your site.
