German AOL.de shows Google results as of today - but only for "worldwide" unrestricted searches.
The default "german web" searches are not powered by Google.
On AOL.fr, France, at the time of posting the international search does not work at all. Might be in the process of changing to Google.
The "french web" search luckily still is served by the brandnew and very good AOL/Exalead search.

As of today also german searches are powered by Google - still mixed with overture!

Ismap - I finally got it: AOL uses Google results filtered for "pages from Germany" only, as opposed to pages in german language.

What an utterly stupid move!

I tried several search, but from here (Italy) it seems that the aol.de server is very slow. often I can not get the results (time over).

Since hours I am trying to figure out what "filters" AOL.de is using and what portion of the sites spidered in the google database show up in the results

Maybe you guys have an idea.

This is what I found out...

Let's say my domain is xyz.de
With my targeted keyword in google.de I am at position 1 and 2. 30 pages of xyz.de are spidered and indexed (positions somewhere in between 20 and 100) in google.de

Let's say my keyword is "liebeskummer" which it isn't but useful for my example

Google.de finds
40.300 results (entire web)
32.300 results (sites in german)
29.900 results (sites from germany)

AOL.de finds
21.100 (entire web)
17.000 (sites from germany)

Only 3 of my pages are in AOL.de while 28 are in Google.de

What happened to my other pages? Grrrrrr

Web.de another german search engine using Google technology shows identical results to Google.de I was expecting the same with AOL.de.... what happened?

Any ideas?

BlueSkyFun - welcome on board!

I'm not sure what's happening with your site and the differences in results.

I have been testing several queries now and invariably they show the exact same serps as Google.de, filtered for pages from Germany (Seiten aus Deutschland).
Interestingly the figures for total results found are always somewhat higher at AOL than Google. Haven't found out yet what those additional results could be and where they are on the serps.

The funny thing is that it doesn't even appear in "worldwide" searches....

My competitor on the third position (my positions are 1 + 2) in Google.de doesn't appear in AOL.de neither.

Let me give you another example. When you search for "versicherungen" you can see that the first result in Google.de is missing in AOL.de as well.

I really hope this is just something temporary and with the google update these days everything will be back to normal....I would really start to dislike this whole Google/AOL deal if I do not get my pages back.... and worst of all can not even find out what the problem is in order to get them back in.... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

:-(((

Thank you for your response Heini!

I am sorry...the search term was "versicherung"

I think I found out what it is.

It seems like AOL.de is using a special filter for "adult" sites... My site isn't an adult site but one of my keywords has more than one meaning and is often used in context with adult pages.

If you search for "erotik" Google.de will give you 1.190.000 results..... AOL.de finds only 4300.

Maybe I am wrong but it looks like there are a whole lot of pages missing.

>Family filter
That was my first thought. I'm sure this explains parts of the differences.
But there's more to it.
Generally Google, regardless if www., plain www, or Google.de unrestricted, for many queries shows different figures of total found results than AOL.de.
Try "Versicherung" (Insurance) worldwide at AOL.de, and compare with the different Google servers. Aol has significantly more than any Google site shows!

This needs further exploration. We'll see how it settles once the Google update is rather stable at Google.de.

For now I go with these two assumptions:
- filtering is basically for pages from Germany ( as opposed to german pages, which include german pages from all TLDs and IPs - default option at Google.de)
- family filter is applied
