Very interesting stats on the share of search engine generated traffic per engine/portal:

1 - Google : 46,3 %
2 - Yahoo! : 17,3 %
3 - Voila : 16,3 %
4 - Lycos : 6,3 %
5 - MSN : 6,2 %
6 - Altavista : 2,4 %
7 - Nomade : 2,2 %
8 - AOL : 0,9 %
9 - Netscape : 0,4 %
10 - Francité : 0,2 %
11 - AllTheWeb : 0,2 %
12 - Hotbot : 0,1 %
13 - Excite : 0,1 %
14 - Ctrouvé : 0,05 %
15 - Looksmart : 0,05 %

Does this meet reality?

heini's new bible = abondonce.com ;-)

I think that maybe Olivier Andrieu (the one-man team behind abondance.com) probably has market shares in google ;-)

Google has certainly taken over as the main SE in France, but I have a hard time believing that SE results from google are equal to all others combined. No way. The top players are google, voila, yahoo, lycos, msn, that much I'll agree with, but google isn't *that* dominant!

I have just checked the stats on several only-French sites I manage, and google, voila and yahoo come out pretty much in a tie.

I also manage several French only sites, but in Canada.

Google provides secondary results for the most popular local French directory (Toile du Québec) and for Yahoo.fr/ca. Since the leading portal here (Sympatico), switched to Google, it provides more than 62% of my traffic! A 45% boost.

This is scary!

>shares in Google

So they have secretely gone public - and you did not buy? ;)

Stats - wether from smaller or from major companies always are a tricky thing.
One of the good things about wmw is we have members giving us some real life experiences.

The market shares of traffic driven by search engines as given above however correlate nicely with figures for Germany for example, so I'm not sure if it's really that far off.

I did an fr site and got massive traffic from google, though it was awhile ago and I can't find my numbers.

The french canadian sites I've worked with were like macguru says highest % of traffic was from sympatico and toile.

One thing to be carefull about La Toile du Québec:

http:*//web.toile.com/ = Google

http:*//recherche.toile.qc.ca/ = Toile searchbox (found in directory)

http:*//www.toile.qc.ca/ = Toile directory (browse cats without search)

Usually, "web.toile.com/ = Google" is just after Google/*

voila.fr = definitely not google. This is the by default SE for subscribers to Wanadoo, France Telecom's internet access, one of the big leaders.

yahoo.fr = uses google as SE when results not found in directory. Most of my results are coming from the directory since I've geen pretty lucky with my submissions there. :-) It occurs to me that for those sites without a good yahoo.fr presence, google is going to help them there!

From my own datas and the one I get from Europe, Voilà is usually far behind on the podium compared to combined Google results. (Indirect referals from Google partners)

So louponne, any numbers you want to share?

French Connexion

Google.fr / Google.com (42,05%)
Wanadoo.fr / Voila.fr (21,30%)
Yahoo.fr / Yahoo.com (15,12%)
Lycos.fr (5,01%)
Msn.fr (3,87%)
Aol.fr (2,61%)
Nomade.fr (2,25%)
Autres (7,77%)

Results coming from Estat.com for Feb 2002, traffic measurement cie (12000 internet sites).
Wanadoo/voila SE of the major Telecom/internet provider 28 % of all Internet connections(the customer that are willing to pay for your products services). Google used by yahoo as alternative. Google used also by some free ISPs. Not to forget: Voila is refreshing every 2 weeks compared to Google every 2 months. Nomade, the other French Directory, is Yahoo like. My site description is the same since 3 years. I will give $$$ to change it. They offer a paying submission. But you can not change your site data if it exists already or something like that ...
and Voila.

Hi French Connexion, thanks for jumping in here :)

So the stats are based on 12000 sites? That should give a fair picture of the french market.

Yes, after adjusting my numbers for the google-partner issue, I'm getting close to what's mentioned above, though still slightly less google and slightly more voila.fr and yahoo.fr directory results. Again, I think that this is due to the fact that I've been pretty lucky in getting good placements and descriptions on voila and yahoo directory mentionings.

My top three are on the average:

Google 39%
Voila 22
Yahoo 18

I guess that's a lot more google than I had thought in my earlier posts - google has certainly improved in the last few months!
