Might be interesting.. See www.google.ru and you will fall from your chair :) No matter this is in Russian. They took google domain, and created the site Google always was against - a lot of info and so on.. Although the search is done with google.com ..

I did. Where did that uncluttered no nonsense appeal go? It's a portal, no more no less. News, ads, stockquotes... even a directory.
It's a collaboration with topcto, right?

Now, it's getting interesting here! www.google.ru does provide Google results. In fact it's a portal site in front of a regular russian Google search.

So we have two russian Googles?
Who is topcto.ru anyway?

topcto.ru - small russian web-rating, which uses name of Google.

I can verify that google.ru is not a Google-owned domain.

Too bad, eh? ;)

So what's the story here - someone was clever enough to lay his hands on this domain name - Google' attempts to get the domain are not successful - instead of losing time with endless lawsuits Google decides to make a deal with that russian company, providing them with Google search - et voila: we have google.com.ru and Google.ru?

I'd love to know the story too, but I don't think we want to get into any legal area that may be dubious for all parties concerned.

There has been a noticeable increase in pagejacking/screen scraping coming from Russian domains. In the last Google update, we found 3 or 4 different .ru sites who were serving one clients content. This clients site got hit with with the PR penalty, which seems to have been caused by the dup content.

While I think it's unfortunate that Google appears to have been attacked in a similar way, having their attention on it might help resolve some of the problems being experienced by many small web sites.
