you are right, the information we have available here is quite old and not really kept up to date. This is due to the fact that the search engine landscape in Europe is changing all the time and local players come and go.
I think the best advice is to focus on Google as most countries have a huge population of Google users. MSN/Live would be next on list of engines to target as they also have some market share locally.
Good luck! :)
For info I do know, Russia is:
1. Yandex
2. Google
3. Rambler
Is Russia Europe? Probably west is Europe, east is Asia. But Moscow and St Petersbourg (the main markets) are all in the west.
Google has 80-94% market shares throughout Europe, so you can safely forget about local engines. In the following countries, there are local engines with measurable traffic:
Germany, Austria: t-online.de, aolsvc.de, web.de
France: Voila.fr
Belgium: Skynet.be
Netherlands: Ilse.nl
Poland: onet.pl
Czech: centrum.cz, seznamn,cs, juxo.cz
Russia: Yandex.ru (almost as big as Google locally), rambler.ru
Sweden: Eniro.se
Norway: Kvasir.no
Denmark: Jubii.dk, eniro.dk
You should keep in mind, that some of the above may have Google onboard.
In the following countries, local engines (if any) do not produce measurable traffic, at least not that I have seen:
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Spain, Portugal, Italy (arianna.libero.it and virgilio.it a.k.a search.alice.it, are both Google-based).
