Just wondering does anyone know where I can get any stats on what are the most popular search engines and directories in Holland. I checked this page on the SEW site but it doesn't seem to cover The Netherlands.
also, is it worth doing a page optimised in English on a Dutch language site for those dutch people who might search in English?
Thanks for your help
ck
Actually found some stats, for anyone looking!!
If anyone knows of any others though...
Your idea of putting an english page on a dutch site - hmm, never thought about such a strategy. On bigger engines it might be difficult to get such a page ranking, difficult to theme it.
Also I believe that users searching for english terms would set options to worldwide anyway, or use an international engine like Google or Alltheweb.
Perhaps one of our dutch members will help?
Regarding putting an english page on a dutch site:
That could actually be a very good idea. Imagine a dutch user searching for a english word on a dutch search engine. There's not much competition on english words on non-english search engines.
Check out this thread [webmasterworld.com] on translations and note Rencke's case study. Maybe it is not excately what you're looking for, but it is very good for getting ideas.
I had actually decided against that strategy, esp. following Heini's post, in that if someone searches a local site, they will be expecting dutch content and are probably not likely to search in english on a dutch language search engine.
If they did a search in English, it would probably be using Google or one of the international search engines. And it would be harder to compete for an English term on those. Also we have an English language version of the site anyway, so this would probably come up first before the english page on the dutch site. Although the content on our english site is not specifically geared towards the dutch market...
Any dutch people out there with any insights into dutch searching patterns??
Thanks
At the moment there are almost no listings in Yahoo / Netherlands, and especially not that have a dutch description. So why not just optimise for Google and you will do well anyway?
I would love to submit to Yahoo, but this would be only worth the money if I can give a dutch description, and about that I am still not sure, anybody some experience. In their rules it is sayed it should be english?
To Answer for Heini, I do get quite a lot of traffic from Yahoogle, around 30% - 40% from what I get from Google itself.
[startpagina.nl...]
is the main one.
It is similar to DMOZ, run by volonteers, yet it has more categories and pages listed than the Dutch part of DMOZ.
Startpagina.nl is the page used by most Dutch as their start-up page.
Not all pages within this directory use straight links, some are javascript links.
Also check this thread for more up-to-date stuff on the Dutch search engine market.
