There are several places one the net that offer to certify you in ecommerce. Many industries have this, so I am not surprised that it is offered for ecommerce. It is basically to prove that you took a class or test about ecommerce and passed. You mostly see it on people's resume as a way to prove that they have experience and knowledge in a field.

It can be helpful if the certification is from a reputable place. You at least know the person has an inkling of what's going on. That being said, no matter what class they took, doesn't mean that they are very good at it.

I've just searched Google for "Certified E-Commerce consultant " and needless to say found many companies selling courses which provide 'successful' candidates with a certificate as a qualified E-Commerce consultant.

Who judges the judges or trains the trainers?

Anyone fancy forming a university of e-commerce?

I wonder who takes all these certificates seriously. No doubt that certain qualifications are essential but if you have just come out of the Online University of E-Commerce in Cyber Space and all you have is a sheet of paper that says you are now qualified - what is it worth and what does it say about you.

On the other hand, a fistful of referals and a smart portfolio is a different story.
